Aged Care Quality Standards
To support public providers of residential aged care to transition to the new single Aged Care Quality Standards, the VHA developed of a range of capacity building resources across key priority areas. These tools provide an overview of the new standards, highlight key considerations for the transition, suggests strategies to support providers make changes to systems and processes, support services identify gaps against each of the requirements, track progress in implementing each standard and prepare for accreditation under the new standards.
To support public hospitals delivering residential aged care support their frontline staff transition to the new standards, the VHA developed a series of educational videos that align with each standard along with accompanying posters aimed at raising staff awareness of the changes, building understanding of the new standards and keeping the new standards front of mind across the organisation.

Aged care standards posters
The VHA has prepared posters for each of the standards for providers to print and place in staff rooms, on noticeboards and around facilities.
The VHA developed this guidance document for public sector residential aged care services to provide an overview of the new aged care quality standards, highlight key considerations for transitioning to the new standards, provide information about the key differences between the new standards when compared to the existing Aged care accreditation standards, and outline potential strategies to address the changes and prepare for the new standards including supporting documentation to be drawn upon to support the transition.
New aged care quality standards organisational monitoring tool
The VHA has developed this organisational monitoring tool for public sector residential aged care services to identify gaps against each of the requirements, track progress in implementing each standard and prepare for accreditation under the new standards.
Given the importance of the transition to the new aged care quality standards, public hospitals delivering residential aged care are encouraged to include the transition as an item for discussion on the agenda of board of directors meetings. To support this, the following resources have been developed by the VHA:
- an editable board paper summarising the new standards and change in requirements, including a number of questions boards should be asking in relation to the implementation of the new standards
- a paragraph outlining the new requirements for inclusion in a CEO report, including information about the suite of resources available to health services to support the transition.
