Update: Coronavirus (COVID-19) – 27 February
February 27, 2020
So far, 15 cases have been identified in Australia, with eight additional cases amongst Diamond Princess passengers, all being managed or recovered.
No evidence of community transmission, and efforts to date have concentrated on containment, and preparing for acute care. Focus is now shifting to primary care and aged care for community management.
Spread in many other countries suggests rigid border measures and containment are not likely to be successful.
Risk to Australia of further outbreaks is high, particularly given neighbouring countries with high volume of traffic to China.
Therefore Commonwealth and state and territory health authorities, through the Australian Health Protection Principals Committee (AHPPC), are now focusing on preparedness for outbreaks of sustained community transmission.
