Reflecting on a year of reform and response
October 7, 2021
Our 2020-21 Annual Report reflects on a year in the Victorian public health sector that has been underscored by significant reform and continued pandemic response. Over the past 12 months, the VHA has worked to connect, strengthen and support Victoria’s public health and community health services as they navigated these challenges.
In the report, the VHA’s Board Chair Dr Sue Matthews, said the impacts of the pandemic will continue to be felt for years to come.
‘Our health, community health and social services will require significant support to recover and rebuild,’ Dr Matthews said.
‘This is where the VHA has played – and continues to play – such an important role in advocating for the needs of the whole sector and amplifying the voice of individual services.’
The report highlights key activities that the VHA undertook in 2020-21 to support the sector, in line with its revised Strategic plan.
In his message, the VHA’s CEO Tom Symondson reflected on the VHA’s operations during a time of challenges and change.
‘During the 2020-21 year, we developed influential submissions and advocated on behalf of members to state and commonwealth governments, resulting in positive change for the sector,’ Mr Symondson said.
‘We have helped members engage with key issues such as mental health, climate change and the rapidly changing digital health landscape. We have brought members together to share insights, contribute ideas and help shape dynamic responses to sector-critical issues. And we have worked to address day-to-day challenges in areas such as administrative burden, executive and staff wellbeing, financial sustainability, and governance.’
‘With a better understanding of how the pandemic has affected – and will continue to affect – the way Victorians live, work and access care, the VHA has reshaped its workforce and activities to ensure we are continuously delivering value to our members.’
With this renewed focus, the VHA will continue its efforts to strengthen the health system in 2022 and beyond.
To help us celebrate the sector and reflect on the year, VHA members can add to our #StateofHealth time capsule.
