Strategic Effectiveness for Boards

The board plays a key role in setting the strategic objectives of a health service. The Department of Health and Human Services expects health service boards to take a bigger picture view of the health sector and consider the long-term objectives of the health service and service delivery in its approach to governance.

Being strategic in not just about having a strategic plan, a strategic board director is constantly scanning the environment, considering opportunities and looking towards the future. What does this mean in practical terms and how does a board maintain a strategic lens whilst ensuring oversight of organisational performance? How do directors ensure due diligence without getting too involved in operations? How do directors ensure they are asking strategic questions?

This session will explore what strategy means at the board level and how directors can ensure they are adopting a proactive strategic approach in the way they conduct the business of governance.
