Strategic Effectiveness for Boards

The board plays a key role in setting the strategic objectives of the health service. The DHHS expects that a health service board will take a bigger picture view of the health sector and consider the long term objectives of the health service and service delivery in its approach to governance. Being strategic is not just about having a strategic plan, a strategic director is constantly scanning the environment, considering opportunities and looking towards the future.

What does this mean in practical terms and how does a board ensure it maintains a strategic lens whilst ensuring oversight of organisational performance? How do directors ensure due diligence without getting too involved in operations? How do directors ensure that they are asking strategic questions? This session will explore what strategy means at the board level and how directors can ensure they are adopting a proactive strategic approach in the way they conduct the business of governance.
