WRAP UP: VHA USA & Canada Study Tour

After two weeks the 2018 VHA USA and Canada Study Tour has concluded with many learnings and experiences. 

‘The opportunity to meet with people of high calibre and great knowledge within the health and medical profession worldwide and visit leading and innovative health care services has been a valuable experience,’ said VHA CEO Tom Symondson.

‘Strong connections have been made and we’re excited about taking our learnings back home and sharing some of the ideas and initiatives across our health system.’

The group visited some of North America’s leading health service providers and organisations. Highlights of the tour include meeting Professor Ian Meredith, Global Chief Medical Officer at Boston Scientific, where they gained insights into differences between the U.S. and Australian healthcare systems, and meeting with Professor Michael Porter for an inspiring discussion on value-based health care.

In addition, the group stepped into the lab with a tour of the Canadian Centre for Regenerative Medicine, learning about Indigenous health programs and workforce issues at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and NorWest Community Health Centres, discussing the need for greater transformation in the areas of prevention and chronic disease management. The group also heard from the award-winning Dr Charles Sorenson, President Emeritus of Intermountain Healthcare in Utah and a visit to the world-renowned Kaiser Permanente.
