Filling the gap: Grattan Institute releases report on dental care

Posted 20 March 2019

The VHA welcomes a Grattan Institute report that recommends universal dental care for Australia.

The Grattan Institute this week released the report, Filling the dental gap: A universal dental scheme for Australia, which reviewed and made recommendations on the existing Australian dental system. The report noted key challenges, including the varied dental systems in each state, the reliance on private patient spending and the potential impact that cost has on patients delaying treatment. The report calls for a gradual expansion of dental care provision, led and funded by the Commonwealth Government, with a greater focus on prevention, primary dental care and early intervention.

The VHA welcomes the recommendation to support public dental services including Victoria’s community health services, which provide public dental care in communities across the state.

In 2015-16 there were 67,266 potentially preventable hospitalisations for oral health problems, with around one-third of these children under the age of nine years.

The full report is available here.
