VHA professional development: update on our 2022 offerings

To support board chairs, directors and prospective board members, as well as CEOs, the VHA is delivering a range of professional development events.

While these events are designed to support the public health sector, they are also open to non members and will benefit other related industries including non-profit, private health and other community-focused sectors.

Health Board Essentials (February-April)

The VHA’s Health Board Essentials 2022 program will commence on 8 February (12-2pm) with a session introducing participants to the Victorian health system. This session will include an overview of key stakeholders and types of health services, and will explore current priorities and challenges.  This topic is ideal for those not familiar with Victoria’s health system or wanting to update their knowledge following recent changes

The HBE program provides participants with a unique insight into the important role board members play in the health system. Delivered in partnership with the Australian Centre for Healthcare Governance, the modules provide board members (new, current and future) with the essential skills needed to make an active contribution to their organisations and the sector. They can be completed as individual modules as a refresher or, ideally, as a complete program.

Delivered fortnightly, each module will be delivered by a highly experienced facilitator with significant experience in the health sector.

Lunch and learn webinars will resume in February

The first 2022 webinar in the VHA’s lunch and learn series, titled ‘Board meetings in 2022: what does the new BAU look like?’, will take place on 23 February from 12-2pm.

At a time when Victoria’s health and aged care services seek to strike an effective balance between ‘business as usual’ activity and COVID-19 responses, VHA Director, Strategy & Engagement, Micaela Drieberg, and guest panellists will explore the governance lessons learned during the pandemic and how these might be applied to board activity on an ongoing basis.

The session will highlight governance innovations adopted within the public health system during the pandemic, covering topics such as the benefits and challenges of virtual and hybrid meetings, how virtual environments can be used as tools to conduct business as well as build comradery and engagement, maintaining COVIDsafe processes and procedures, and successfully integrating and supporting new board appointments.

This session will be of particular interest to board directors, secretaries and those who interact with boards.

Lunch and learn courses are priced at $40 for VHA members and $70 for non-members, while on-demand access is $15 per person for a member and $25 per person for a non-member.

 

Mentoring program for healthcare leaders

The VHA mentoring program is a 12-month structured, mentee-driven program where mentors and mentees agree to meet monthly for 60 to 90-minute mentoring meetings. These meetings may be a mix of face-to-face, telephone, or online conferencing, depending on the location and availability of the participants. 

Training included as part of the program adds a valuable development opportunity for both mentors and mentees. An induction event is held to establish the mentoring process. Throughout the program, participants are then further supported with resources, prompts, and additional touch points.
