Premier announces Royal Commission into Mental Health
October 24, 2018
The Victorian Healthcare Association applauds the announcement today by the Premier, Daniel Andrews MP, that if re-elected the Government will launch a Royal Commission into Mental Health.
‘It takes bravery to admit that government do not have all of the answers, and a Royal Commission is the first step towards delivering the fundamental reform our mental health system needs. We also congratulate the Premier on his statement that nothing will be off limits,’ said VHA CEO Tom Symondson.
‘For far too long, the stigma associated with mental illness has kept the issue in the shadows. Almost half of all Victorians will experience mental illness in their lifetime and thousands of people each year lose their lives as a direct result, something we cannot accept any longer. A Royal Commission will shine a light on the very real issues faced by those in our community and give a voice to those who experience mental illness.
‘It will also provide a unique opportunity for mental health services, both acute and community-based, to provide their insights into the scale and nature of the challenges we face and the reforms needed to address them. What we hope a Royal Commission will lead to is a better-integrated system which provides the best possible support for our community.’
