September 29, 2020
Following the appointment of Martin Foley as the new Minister for Health over the weekend, the Premier has appointed Deputy Premier James Merlino to the Mental Health portfolio.
Tom Symondson, the Chief Executive of the VHA has welcomed the announcements saying the sector has a strong relationship with Minister Foley through his leadership of mental health reform in Victoria.
‘I look forward to working with Minister Foley as our sector continues its fight against this pandemic and beyond,’ Mr Symondson said. ‘In his role as Minister for Mental Health and also previously with responsibility for aged care, the sector has come to value his focus on improving the care and support that Victorians receive and his deep understanding of our health system.
‘During our 80 years of leadership in the health sector we have always worked with government to ensure Victorians get access to the best healthcare possible. That has never been more important than it is right now, and we congratulate Minister Foley on taking on this critical role.
Mr Symondson also acknowledged the dedication of the former Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos leading the sector during a once-in-a-century global pandemic.
‘We thank Ms Mikakos for her dedicated service to the health sector and the Victorian community, particularly during the challenges of 2020, and I wish her all the very best for her next chapter.’
