Announcement of leadership change at the VHA

July 11, 2022

From the VHA Board Chair, Dr Sue Matthews

It is with both sadness and gratitude that I announce Tom Symondson’s resignation as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Victorian Healthcare Association (VHA).

Since 2012, Tom has played a critical role in the development, growth and success of the VHA.

While we will miss his leadership, we wish Tom the best of luck in his new role as CEO of the newly formed Aged and Community Care Providers Association (ACCPA).

We would like to thank Tom for his 10 years of dedicated service as CEO, which have involved many significant accomplishments, including:

  • building a strong public profile for the VHA, in particular during the pandemic, and advocating the views of our sector by way of extensive public commentary on a range of critical issues for members
  • developing trusted relationships with leaders across the political spectrum including ministers, shadow ministers and cross bench MPs, to ensure the best outcomes for VHA members
  • positioning the VHA as a partner to government in the delivery of key reform in areas such as mental health, rural health, aged care and community health, to ensure that reform was sector informed and delivered positive outcomes for members and the community
  • building the membership of the VHA to include almost 100 per cent of public hospitals and community health services as well as other significant providers such as Forensicare, Ambulance Victoria and the Royal Flying Doctors.

Tom will continue to lead the VHA until September 2022.

Over the next few months, we will be conducting a search to find a new CEO for the VHA. While that work is underway, we intend to hire an interim CEO who can maintain a stable and effective organisation during the transition period.

Tom leaves us in a strong position, and we cannot thank him enough for the commitment, knowledge, and passion he has given to the VHA over the past 10 years. He will be greatly missed by our staff, Board, members and stakeholders alike.

We look forward to developing this next chapter for the VHA, as we continue to build on our successes, support and advocate for members, and strive to achieve our vision of a healthcare system that meets the evolving needs of all Victorians.
