On 5 October 2021, the Victorian Government introduced the Health Legislation Amendment (Information Sharing) Bill 2021, implementing legislation that was first consulted on in 2020. When passed, the legislation will enable services to share healthcare information between services and the Department of Health. In 2019, the Audit Act 1994 was amended, resulting in a requirement for VAGO oversight of additional public organisation accounts, including those of the 29 registered Victorian community health services. This oversight became effective on 1 July 2019. This member briefing has been prepared in response to concerns from community health services about increased audit costs caused by the Audit Act amendments. The briefing summarises information that may assist community health services experiencing an increase in their audit costs to identify ways of understanding and (possibly) reducing these costs.Download
From 2018 to 2020 there were 14 outbreaks in Victorian hospitals caused by resistant pathogens. These outbreaks result in disruption of care and significant economic costs – and are an ongoing concern for the VHA and its members.
The Victorian Strategy has been developed in response to a national approach. Australia’s second National Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy was released in March 2020 and sets out the priorities for a coordinated national response. However, the states and territories are responsible for a wide range of actions in the national strategy. Victoria’s proposed strategy seeks to put a number of these into action.
To respond to the current and future risks of climate change, the Department of Health and Department of Families, Fairness and Housing has developed a consultation draft Health and Human Services Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan 2022-2026. The draft Plan is intended to guide climate adaptation response across the health and human services sector, proposing short-, medium- and long-term objectives to address climate change impacts. The Victorian Government is drafting a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Act, as recommended by the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. A consultation process has been launched and the VHA and Mental Health Victoria are delivering a series of consultation workshops to understand the service perspective.
