About the Victorian Healthcare Association

The Victorian Healthcare Association (VHA) is the peak body supporting Victoria’s public health services to deliver high-quality care. Established in 1938, the VHA represents Victoria’s diverse public healthcare sector, including public hospitals, aged care and community health services.

As well as providing a unified voice for the sector, the VHA delivers value for its members by offering tailored professional development programs, networking opportunities, and informative events. The VHA advocates on behalf of its members on sector-critical issues by engaging and influencing key decision-makers involved in policy development and system reform.

Key responsibilities

Reporting to the General Manager, Policy and Advocacy, you will:

  • identify key public policy issues of significance by working with our membership, stakeholders and with the VHA team
  • research and collate information from diverse sources such as direct interaction with VHA members, external stakeholders and from other forms of open-source and proprietary sources
  • create and maintain resources that provide health system insights for the membership and stakeholders
  • develop various policy articles, briefings, presentations and other forms of reporting that advances the public healthcare sector
  • represent the interests of VHA members, the public healthcare system and the community by engaging with policy decision-makers both in government and non-government settings
  • assist the General Manager, Policy and Advocacy in executing the strategic objectives of the VHA
  • carry out other activities as required to support the policy and advocacy program of work.

Selection criteria

Essential

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the local and national political landscape.
  • A highly developed understanding of the processes and dynamics behind the legislative process and Victorian public service.
  • Exceptional ability to synthesise information from vastly diverse sources of information.
  • Strong capability in providing timely analysis of qualitative and quantitative data sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex policy concepts into compelling narratives that will influence decision-makers and the public.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and flexibly, as well as cooperatively as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Experience and/or understanding of Victoria’s health system.
  • Experience working for or with a peak membership or advocacy body.
  • Experience working in collaboration with government departments and agencies.
  • Experience writing media briefings and content for websites, media and other communication channels.
