National Health Reform

The Commonwealth Government pledged to provide an additional $16.4 billion in healthcare funding between 2015 and 2020, under the National Health Reform Agreement signed on 2 August 2011.

The Independent Hospital Pricing Authority (IHPA) collects all hospital funding from the state and federal governments, then distributes it directly to local hospital networks according to their activity levels. Each year, the IHPA sets the national efficient price for public hospital services, and defines the weighting for different service types. Small rural health services are block-funded.

Medicare Locals will coordinate primary health care delivery, identify local health care needs and fill service gaps. The National Performance Authority will monitor health services against a National Performance and Accountability Framework and report publically.
