VHA calls for community members to get onboard

Posted 25 January 2016

The Victorian Healthcare Association (VHA) has encouraged Victorians to consider applying to serve on their local hospital board as applications for the role open across the state this Saturday.

VHA CEO Tom Symondson said there could be no more important job than ensuring the community has access to safe, sustainable and appropriate care.

“Victoria’s public hospitals are essential to the communities they serve and they require a diverse and qualified set of skills to ensure they best meet the needs of their communities,” Mr Symondson said.

“We would really like to see board members that reflect not just a broad skillset but also the diversity of the communities they service.

“While Victoria’s public health sector performs well with respect to gender compared with other industries, with 44 per cent of board members being women and growing, it is important there is improved participation from other demographic groups.

“So in addition to women I strongly encourage Victorians with varying ethnicity, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexuality, age, disability, education, experience and skills to apply for a position on their local hospital board.

”Mr Symondson said the VHA has a strong interest in the effectiveness of Victorian hospital boards and is keen to work with current and new board members in strengthening their clinical, financial and administrative skills as well as succession planning.

“We recognise that for many individuals there are barriers to committing the time and energy to serving on a board and the VHA is committed to helping alleviate this challenge to improve access to these roles and help hospital boards achieve better diversity,” Mr Symondson said.

Applications for Victorian hospital board positions are open from 30 January to 12 February and can be accessed here.
