The Women’s chief named new Board Chair

Posted 22 October 2018

At the VHA AGM last week Dr Sue Matthews, CEO of The Royal Women’s Hospital, was announced as the new Board Chair succeeding Gary Thomas. The VHA also released their 2017-18 Annual Report and VHA Strategy 2019-22 at the meeting.

Dr Matthews joined The Women's from the Niagara Health System in Ontario, where she held the position of interim President and CEO from 2011-2013. Prior to that, she was Executive Vice President, Clinical Operations and Chief Nursing Executive.

‘I’m delighted to be the incoming Board Chair of the VHA. I’m looking forward to working with the Board and continuing to be a positive voice and strong advocate for our members,’ said Dr Matthews.

‘We also thank Gary Thomas for his years of service to the VHA Board and the Victorian healthcare sector. Over the 12 years Gary has been a part of much change in the sector including aged care and disability reform, healthcare reform as well as policy change to address core system issues. Throughout all the change, Gary has shown strong leadership as a Board Director and the past four years as Chair.’

In her first role as Board Chair at the VHA 80th celebration and awards ceremony, Dr Matthews said that it’s a privilege and a great responsibility to be the incoming Board Chair of the VHA, particularly on its 80th anniversary, and she looks forward to helping drive and shape a Victorian healthcare system that meets the evolving needs of today and the future.

‘We must do things differently to strengthen the Victorian healthcare system. It’s a time of great opportunity for the sector and the VHA,’ she said.

Also at the VHA AGM Trevor Adem, CEO of East Wimmera Health Service was elected Deputy Chair.  Trevor has served as the rural health services CEO representative on the VHA Board since October 2013.
