Mental health royal commission leads announced

Posted 25 February 2019

The Victorian Healthcare Association welcomes the announcement of the commissioners and terms of reference for the Royal Commission into Mental Health by the Victorian Government yesterday.

Public policy expert Penny Armytage has been appointed chair of the Royal Commission and will be joined by Associate Professor Alex Cockram, Professor Allan Fels AO and Bernadette McSherry, as the commissioners who will lead the inquiry.

VHA CEO Tom Symondson said the Royal Commission is the first step towards delivering the fundamental reform the Victorian mental health system needs.

‘It will provide a unique opportunity for mental health services, both acute and community-based, to provide their insights into the scale and nature of the challenges we face and the reforms needed to address them. What we hope the Royal Commission will lead to is a better-integrated system which provides the best possible support for those affected by mental illness.'

The terms of reference, which the VHA made a submission to, were developed after consultation with community and experts in the mental health sector, have also been released and can be found here

The commission will deliver a preliminary report by 30 November and a final report in October 2020.
