VHA backs boost to home and community care

Posted 17 August 2018

The Victorian Healthcare Association has today welcomed an announcement at its annual conference by the Shadow Minister for Health, the Hon. Mary Wooldridge MP that a Liberal Government will invest $175 million to expand home and community care.

'Our hospitals are bursting at the seams, and we need to think differently about how we deliver care. The VHA welcomes this initiative, which would see people, who don’t need to be there, out of hospitals and receiving care in the comfort of their own home,’ Chief Executive of the VHA, Tom Symondson said today.

Mr Symondson says that while the VHA looks forward to receiving greater detail in relation to this initiative, he believes that the public and community health sector should be at its core.

‘There 52 existing Hospital in the Home programs operating in public health services around Victoria and we hope that this program would be used to grow these existing services.

‘Our public health services already deliver some of the very best care in the world and an expansion of their existing hospital in the home programs would enable them to treat even more people,’ Chief Executive of the VHA, Tom Symondson said today.

Ms Wooldridge also announced a focus on chronic disease management in community settings and enhanced support for young people transitioning from the Royal Children’s Hospital, which the VHA fully supports.

Mary Wooldridge made the announcement at the second day of the VHA’s Annual Conference Rethink, reset, reimagine: working towards a stronger Victorian health system.
