Denis Walter OAM named Celebrating Aged Care Week Ambassador
Posted 27 July 2017
Well-known broadcaster and entertainer Denis Walter has been named ambassador for 2017 Celebrating Aged Care Week, it was announced today.
Walter, who has received the Order of Australia for services to the performing arts and the media, is passionate about improving life for older Victorians.
He will officially support Celebrating Aged Care Week from 14-18 August, which acknowledges the enormous contribution of Victoria’s thousands of aged care workers.
Walters’ support was today welcomed by the Chair of the Public Sector Aged Care committee Don McRae.
“It’s wonderful to have Denis, who is so popular with so many of our aged care employees, supporting and encouraging their endeavours and supporting Celebrating Aged Care Week,” said McRae today.
The former TV newsreader, whose Afternoons with Denis Walter program on 3AW is a Melbourne institution, is also a stalwart on Carols by Candlelight. He is passionate about many causes, particularly ensuring older Victorians are treated with kindness, respect and care.
“I’m honoured to be involved in Celebrating Aged Care Week. It shows our fantastic aged care staff how much their work is valued. Their contribution to supporting the high quality of care provided to residents is really appreciated by residents, their family, aged care operators and the community at large.
“Celebrating Aged Care Week showcases the opportunities and rewards of working in Public Sector Residential Aged Care,” he said. “I’d also encourage people to nominate their workmates or someone they know for the annual Celebrating Aged Care Awards in passion, leadership and volunteer categories.”
More than 150 Victorian public residential aged care facilities will host events to celebrate the contribution made by aged care workers and volunteers.
Events include morning/afternoon teas, public open days, fun activities planned with residents such as a social dance, BBQs and certificate presentations to staff.
The Celebrating Aged Care Week campaign has been running since 2012 and is an initiative of the PSRAC committee; a network of public sector aged care directors of nursing committed to the improvement of the public residential aged care sector.
Famed foody Maggie Beer will also be a 2017 Celebrating Aged Care Ambassador.
